Our Story: A Real, Human Approach to Therapy
Hi, I am Slavena Lima - the founder of LIMA Counselling & Psychotherapy. I am so glad you are here! I wanted to take a moment to share my story with you, giving you a better sense of who I am and what my practice stands for.
My interest in psychology began in high school, but not in the way you might think. Like many teenagers, I was grappling with my own challenges—struggling with anxiety and self-esteem issues. One day, I picked up a book by Dr. Wayne Dyer, and it felt like a light bulb went off. I became interested with how our minds work and why we feel the way we do.
When I started my undergraduate studies, psychology wasn’t my first choice. I dabbled in various fields, but none of them felt right. It wasn’t until I took my first psychology class that I felt a true connection. Every lecture, every discussion felt like a piece of a puzzle falling into place. I realized that this was what I wanted to learn more about, and I quickly switched my major to psychology. I proudly earned my Honors degree in Psychology from the University of Windsor in 2013.
After graduation, I found myself drawn to working with people facing significant life challenges. I became a Rehabilitation Therapist, specializing in supporting those with acquired brain injuries and mental health diagnoses as a result of motor vehicle accidents. This role allowed me to delve deeper into the complexities of the human mind and spirit. I loved the work—it was fulfilling, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. I witnessed firsthand the resilience of people and the transformative power of compassionate care and meaningful connections.
This drive to support others led me to pursue a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University, New Brunswick, which I completed in August 2021. With my new credentials, I launched my own practice while simultaneously working with other private practices and community organizations. This experience was amazing. I had the privilege of working with a diverse range of people from all walks of life, each with their own unique stories and struggles. Over time, I found myself particularly drawn to supporting adult men and women dealing with anxiety, self-esteem issues, and stress management.
Recognizing my passion and skills in these areas, I made the decision to focus solely on my private practice. I wanted to create a space where people felt truly seen and heard—a place that didn’t feel like a clinical office, but more like a warm, inviting living room. My approach is simple: I see my clients as whole individuals and strive to help them enhance their overall wellness—both psychologically and physically. I believe in meeting my clients where they are, offering a collaborative and transparent approach to therapy that is grounded in authenticity and genuine human connection.
In my practice, there are no suits and ties, no sterile environments. Instead, we sit down with a cup of tea, coffee, or flavored water, get cozy, and engage in meaningful conversations. I love to laugh with my clients, to share in their joys and struggles, and to gently challenge them when needed. Therapy, to me, is about creating a safe and supportive space where people can explore their thoughts and feelings openly and without judgment.
I believe that too many people are suffering in silence when they don’t have to. My mission is to promote open conversations that lead to better, more fulfilling lives. Together, we begin this journey, and though it starts with our partnership, it ultimately becomes your own path to follow. My approach is brief and practical, focusing on equipping you with tools you can use in your everyday life. I believe in the power of transformation, not through years of therapy, but through meaningful, actionable insights that can be applied here and now.
My story is one of hope, purpose, and a strong belief in our ability for growth and healing. I am here to walk with you on your journey, to support you in finding your path to wellness, and to help you live the life you truly deserve.
